The Crow's Nest
Sometimes it is possible to feel utter contentment. Most days are filled with things that need to get done along with other distractions. I left for my morning walk at 5:20 am and actually marveled at the beautiful skyline of Edinburg against the backdrop of the rising sun. Please don’t start shaking your head yet until you read on. As I walked towards Main Street the sun was just peeking over the horizon illuminating Harold and Alida Flom’s home, the elevator and Polar tower. I thought those structures looked like skyscrapers against the background of the other buildings in town. Use your imagination and hopefully you will understand why I think Edinburg is such a wonderful place to live.
Spring has taken a long, long time in coming to this part of the world. In just these past few days leaves have really opened on the trees. All the lawns are beginning to really “green up”. There is a huge crop of dandelions around also. It is fun to have the furnace in the OFF position and have the windows open to let in the fresh air. The most wonderful part of spring is enjoying the fresh asparagus from our garden.
Fieldwork has finally started. We drove down to Park River for breakfast this morning and marveled how fast a wee bit of green is beginning to show up in the fields that had been planted in the last few days. My wish is the rest of the summer season would “creep by” at a snail’s pace.
We have rows of lettuce, onions, peas and radishes that are up and thriving in the garden. There are some very ambitious gardeners in Edinburg this year. Loretta Monson, Mary Burkett, Vera Brandvold and Mary Langerud have taken the idea of raising your own vegetables to another whole level. The 4 of them have spent many hours planning their garden. They now have everything planted with some veggies already up.
The orioles and hummingbirds are back. They both arrived the morning of May 11. We immediately put out our hummingbird feeder and grape jelly. The orioles, along with the robins, catbirds and other devour the grape jelly. I have no idea how many pints I made last year for them.
We are saddened by the death of Blanche Espelien. Reuben died about 1 ½ years ago. Blanche was living in Fargo. Her funeral is this coming Monday morning. Our sympathy is extended to Blanche’s family.
Graduation for the first class of Valley-Edinburg is next Saturday, May 28th at the Edinburg School. Congratulations to all the seniors. Memorial Day will be held the following day with the Edinburg Legion visiting many cemeteries. The day will conclude with a program and lunch at Trinity Lutheran church.
